Naija News looks at the top happenings making headlines on the front pages of Nigeria’s national newspapers today Monday 26th September 2022.
The PUNCH: As preparations for the 2023 general elections gain momentum amid a worsening security situation across the country, the demands for bullet-proof Sports Utility Vehicles have increased significantly. Investigations by our correspondents over the weekend indicate that Very Important Personalities, top chieftains and candidates of political parties have been procuring customised vehicles that offer special protection in the run-up to the campaigns and elections.
The Guardian: Almost a year after The Guardian report on foreign airlines departing Nigerian shores empty, the situation has changed, but for the worse. Today, more airlines are departing without exportable goods, much to the pains of stakeholders and loss of foreign exchange earnings worth billions of dollars yearly. The Guardian findings showed that besides mails that topped cargo net export in 2021, the country slumped in the export of agricultural produce following high rate of rejections and prohibitions overseas over poor packaging, documentation and alleged noncompliance with set standards.
This Day: With 152 days to the 2023 general election, and less than 48 hours to the official commencement of political campaign, as indicated in the timetable and schedule of activities of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, is not just the issue in the election, but he also appears set to disrupt and deadlock the February 25 presidential race. A recent THISDAY survey revealed that with the OBIdient Movement fast gaining traction in many parts of the country, especially, as new volunteers enlist on the Obi project almost on a daily basis, there might not be a clear winner in the first ballot of the presidential run, as the Obi factor might cause a disruption, leading to an inconclusive exercise.
The Nation: Barely 48 hours to the kickoff of the 2023 election campaigns, a fresh crisis has hit the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over how the bulk of the over N10 billion realised by the party from nomination fees paid by aspirants have been spent. The National Working Committee (NWC) has been put to task over the nomination fees, it was learnt yesterday.
Daily Trust: Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has said that Nigeria needs to have national dream and identity which would unity citizens and provide sense of pride and investment in the nation for all.Obasanjo, who was military head of state (1975-1979) and civilian president (1999-2007) said Nigeria is politically disunited at present, economically nowhere and lost its spot on the table on the international scene.
